about

Originally entitled, "Pandemic Birthday," "One Bit Of You" is the fifth single to be released from Dave's real-time project entitled, "Not Gone."One Bit Of You was born on Dave's birthday in September of 2020 as the result of a social media-shared moment where isolation, daily pressures of the pandemic, and an urge to musically break free, prompted a spur of a riff, and the first verse and chorus. Volume can act as its own therapy sometimes, and with the right equipment pairing, the riff in One Bit had took on an addictive and sonically familiar gait -- sort of like a Teenage Fanclub tribute... that thing that one plays when picking up any guitar... to a time in mind (the 1990's) when everything seemed simple and un-calculated, certainly in comparison to 2020. In the recording, the bell-like-clear (alternating melody line) that plays in on the pre-chorus was recorded on a combined duo of a 1960's Rickenbacker and an old Gibson acoustic... together, they have a way of lifting spirits (good thing in these times). Dave played bass and guitars, Chris Harris recorded the drums in his basement; and Dave would have liked to recruit his twin brother, Brian for blood harmonies (and production help), if only time and circumstances permitted such whimsy. One regret is the omission of Beach Boys-inspired harmony lines in the last chorus -- an idea from the fantastic Lisa Traxler; and also suggested by Bill Kates (maybe that version will emerge at some point in the future). Dave Charles: "There's nothing political about this song -- it's about the recognition that only a very loved one can extract."

lyrics

Lyrics:
It’s not so hard to get along when the world is aimed at you
You should try to shrug it off ‘cause the lilacs never bloom
You’ve got to try to cast a blind eye to the whole contingent

They don’t deserve one bit of you

There was a time when you were told that the world was there for you
You could be anything you want now you can’t be everything
I think that we can make the best of this whole situation

They don’t deserve one bit of you

Unblemished… Untarnished
Immune to their philosophy
When everything seems wrong
You’re righting everything with me
I’m glad that I have got you for the next continuation

They don’t deserve one bit of you

It’s not so hard to get along when the world is aimed at you
You should try to shrug it off 'cause the lilacs never bloom
You’ve got to try to cast a blind eye to the whole contingent

They don’t deserve one bit of you
They don’t deserve...
They don’t deserve…
They don’t deserve one bit of you

about

Dave Charles Boston, Massachusetts

Fans of the Boston rock scene may remember seeing “The Next” spray-painted on walls and bridges and hearing Sidewalk Gallery on Boston airwaves in the 80’s and 90’s. Both bands featured the distinct harmonies of twin brothers Dave and Brian Charles, who still live and make music here. In 2019, Dave recently started writing and recording again with massively-overdriven guitars and pop melodies. ... more
